INDIANAPOLIS — Center Marvin Bagley scored 23 points and posted 14 rebounds to lead a short-handed Wizards team to a 108-89 win over the Pacers in a relatively quiet Gainbridge Fieldhouse with the snow still blanketing Indy on Sunday afternoon.
The Pacers have lost two straight and fell to 6-20 overall. The Wizards, still owners of the Eastern Conference’s worst record and the second-worst mark in the NBA, improved to 4-21.
Guard C.J. McCollum added 18 points for the Wizards. Forward Justin Champagnie posted 13 points and 14 rebounds. Guard Bennedict Mathurin led the Pacers with 15 points.
Pacers disintegrate in middle two quarters
The Pacers were still in good position to get Rick Carlisle his 1,000th win after the first quarter, leading 32-31. Even at 6:01 in the second quarter they took a 40-39 lead on a reverse layup by Jay Huff. However, from that point forward, they seemed to lose everything in the way of direction and purpose when it came to trying to put the ball in the bucket.
The Pacers were outscored 27-15 in the second quarter, making just 5 of 21 field goals and 1 of 9 3-pointers in the period. They lost the third period 23-19 and were 6 of 20 from the floor in that period, making just 1 of 9 3-pointers. They posted 0.69 points per possession in the second, 0.84 in the third. The Pacers trailed by as many as 16 points and were down 81-66 at the end of three. Center Jay Huff was the only Pacers player who had more than two field goals in the middle two periods with four.
The Pacers finished 31 of 84 from the floor and 10 of 39 from 3.
Pacers stars struggle
After carrying the Pacers to a win over the Kings on Monday, top players Pascal Siakam, Andrew Nembhard and Bennedict Mathurin had some struggles in Friday’s loss to Philadelphia and they were collectively even worse against the Wizards.
Nembhard missed his first 11 field goal attempts before he finally got a 3-pointer to fall. He knocked down three straight shots, but still finished with seven points on 3 of 14 shooting including 1 of 4 from 3-point range. He dished out six assists as a bright spot, but the inability to put the ball in the bucket was killer.
Bennedict Mathurin was 2 of 8 from the floor in Friday night’s loss and 3 of 9 on Sunday. He managed to get to the line for eight free throws and finished with eight points, but that’s been his only means of offense. He finished 1 of 5 from three
Siakam still got in double figures and has been there in every game he’s appeared in this season, but he was just 4 of 12 from the floor for 11 points.
Quenton Jackson gets back on the floor
Quenton Jackson played in his first Pacers game since suffering a hamstring strain on Nov. 3. He played in a Noblesville Boom game on Thursday night and was available for Friday’s game against the 76ers, but didn’t get on the floor.
Jackson played eight minutes and scored just one point on 0 of 3 shooting but he did grab three rebounds.
