We have a late game contest on Monday from the Western Conference in this Grizzlies vs. Clippers prediction. Memphis (11-14) has been playing better as of late, winning five of seven, but lost their last game on Dec. 12, 130-126 to Utah at home. The Clippers (6-19) have lost three straight and eight of nine. These teams have met twice this season, with Memphis winning both SU and ATS. Terms & Conditions Roller coaster season continues for Memphis
Memphis had won two straight over the Clippers and Portland before falling to Utah after a long break on Friday. Keyonte George scored a career-high 39 points to lead the Jazz. Guard Ja Morant returned to the lineup, scoring 21 points and dishing out 10 assists in his first game since Nov. 15 due to a calf injury. Rookie guard Cedric Coward chipped in with 17 points and 12 rebounds. While Morant returned to the line. 7-4 center Zach Edey (13.6pppg, 11.1rpg) is now out for a month due to an ankle injury.
With Edey out, the Grizzlies turn to Santa Aldama at center, who had 22 points and seven rebounds. Injuries have hampered the Grizz all season and it continues with Edye and guard Ty Jerome (calf) out. Jerome hasn’t played all season, but averaged 12.5 points and shot 43.9% from three-point range with Cleveland last season. He certainly could have helped one of the worst three-point shooting teams in the league (34.1%).
It’s all about Morant (18.2ppg, 7.8apg), who has played in just 13 games and is shooting 35.8% from the field and 18.5% from long range this season. Jaren Jackson Jr. adds 16.8 points and just 5.0 rebounds. Memphis ranks 7th in rebound rate, but the loss of Edey is a tough one.
The Grizzlies rank 18th in Adjusted Net Rating on DunksandThrees.com.
Disastrous start for Clippers
Things couldn’t go worse for the Clippers this season on and off the court. In early December, the Clippers cut ties with 40-year-old guard Chris Paul, who was averaging just 2.6 points and 3.3 assists and did not play in five straight games in mid-November. Los Angeles has lost three straight, including a 115-113 defeat at Houston last Thursday. The Clippers did cover the nine points and played well, led by Ivica Zubac, who had 33 points and seven rebounds, while Kawhi Leonard chipped in with 24 points, nine rebounds, four assists and five steals.
To make matters worse for the Clippers, they’ve played 12 of their last 14 on the road, going 3-11. Now, things turn as they will play eight of their next 10 at home. Considering they have aging players in James Harden (36), Leonard (34) and Nicolas Batum (37), this might pay dividends. Harden leads the team with 26.6 points and 8.2 assists, while Leonard adds 25.3 points and 5.7 rebounds, shooting 48.6% from the field and 38% from long range in 15 games.
Despite their record, the Clippers rank 19th in Adjusted Net Rating, 12th in Adjusted Offense and 22nd in Adjusted Defense.
Spread Pick for Grizzlies vs. ClippersGrizzlies vs. Clippers Spread Pick and Prediction
I just can’t take the Clippers, even at home, where they are 3-7. The Grizzlies are the better team, even if the Clippers have future Hall of Famers in Leonard and Harden. Aldama will do a solid job on Zubac and the Grizzlies will try and use their athleticism to push the ball against an aging team. Memphis has also won and covered both games this season without Morant, and the role players, including Coward and Cam Spencer, produced in those games.
Both meetings this season went under as the Clippers scored just 98 points in the game on Dec. 5. Memphis has gone under in four of their last six games. The Clippers have gone under in three of their last four games. In the least shocking news of this prediction, the Clippers are 29th in pace of play.
