CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers got back at it on Wednesday as they continue to prepare for the New York Knicks on Friday and then the rest of the season. With the NBA Cup now wrapped up, the Sixers can move forward with the rest of the season and continue to find a groove and climb up the standings in the East.
In terms of injuries, the Sixers got Tyrese Maxey back on the floor at practice after the 6-year guard out of Kentucky missed the previous two games due to an illness. Philadelphia went 1-1 without him, but coach Nick Nurse is just happy to have his star guard back out there.
“He looked like he’s been off for a little bit,” Nurse said on Wednesday. “It’s been a good chunk of time. I know he was in—what is today—he was in yesterday getting some individual work in. Today was some teamwork, but he looked like he needs it. He needs it.”
While the Sixers got Maxey back from his illness, they are still missing Kelly Oubre Jr. and Trendon Watford. Oubre has not played since Nov. 14 due to a left knee sprain while Watford has not played since Nov. 25 due to a left adductor strain. The Sixers announced that both players have progressed to doing individualized workouts on the floor in an effort to keep getting closer to a return.
Watford has continued to be around the team as has Oubre. The two were with the team in Atlanta on Sunday so that is a positive sign for Philadelphia going forward.
“It’s great,” Nurse stated. “I think you certainly would—when you see them around and shooting and on the court and doing stuff, you know they’re getting closer. That’s a lot better than when you don’t see them on the court. You know it’s a ways away. So I’m hoping it’s going to speed up here. I know we’re getting through almost this month now. So there’s a good chunk of games coming after the holiday. So hopefully we’ll get one back, maybe two back here pretty soon.”
The Sixers will play the NBA Cup champion New York Knicks on Friday.
