The 2025-26 season for the Boston Celtics began as a transition campaign. After years of championship contention, the Celtics were taking a step back during Jayson Tatum’s injury. Moving on from key members of the roster in the offseason, the Celtics were going to use the season to evaluate their roster and see who can be a part of this core in the long run.

Baylor Scheierman was among a group of Celtics who were auditioning for a role going forward. Heading into his second season in the league, he was going to get a chance to prove himself and carve out a rotation role. The 25-year-old shooting guard has gotten the chance in the first two months of the season, but hasn’t done much with it.

Celtics’ Baylor Scheierman Hasn’t Shown Much Improvement in 2nd Year

Head coach Joe Mazzulla has been giving different players a look as the fifth starter next to Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, Jaylen Brown, and Neemias Queta. Starters and closers around this core four have changed all season, but Scheierman never got a real look in that role. Despite Mazzulla’s constant search, Scheierman mostly remained on the fringes of the rotation, averaging 12 minutes per game in 22 appearances.

It’s not like he is trending up, either. He has averaged 11 minutes per game in Boston’s last four games. He has taken a total of six shots and made one, averaging less than a point per game in those appearances.

And that has been the story for the former 30th-overall pick all season. He is rarely involved in the offense, barely touching the ball. His usage rate of 9.2% is not only the lowest mark on the team among regular rotation players, but is also one of the lowest in the entire NBA. In fact, among players who have played at least 200 minutes this season, only three players have a lower usage rate than Scheierman, per Cleaning the Glass.

When a player is so underutilized on offense, they have to find ways to be effective. That can be through crashing the glass, running out in transition, or making hustle plays to get chances to score the ball. While Scheierman has been decent as a defender this season, he hasn’t made much of an impact in other areas of the game.

That is why he is firmly behind the likes of Jordan Walsh, Josh Minott, and Sam Hauser in the rotation. Even 19-year-old rookie Hugo Gonzalez has been playing more in recent weeks and has been a more effective two-way player.

While Scheierman is still in the early stages of his NBA career, he is already 25 years old. If there is any interest around the former Creighton standout ahead of the trade deadline, the Celtics would be wise to move on from him and fill his spot with a better offensive player.
