Despite being arguably the greatest player in franchise history, Kevin Garnett’s relationship with the Minnesota Timberwolves wasn’t on the best of terms until a new ownership group took over. The 2008 NBA champion started beefing with former owner Glen Taylor in 2016, which halted plans to retire his jersey.

Nearly a decade after the fallout with Glen, Garnett is returning to the franchise with an off-court role.

NBA insider Shams Charania reported on Thursday that Garnett will join the Timberwolves and their WNBA sister franchise, the Minnesota Lynx, “in a new, all-encompassing role involving business, community efforts and content development.”

Garnett has developed a strong online presence with his “KG Certified” show, his joint “Ticket & The Truth” show with Paul Pierce and more.

As part of his return, the Wolves will retire Garnett’s No. 21 jersey, Charania added. The Timberwolves selected Garnett with the No. 5 overall pick in the 1995 NBA draft. He spent 12 seasons with the team, becoming the best player to wear the jersey.

Garnett led Minnesota to eight straight playoff appearances, including the Western Conference Finals in 2004, the same season he won his first and only MVP award. He was a 10-time All-Star in Minnesota before the Wolves traded him to the Boston Celtics in 2007.

He won the NBA championship a year later, becoming a legend in Boston, too. Nearly 17 years after that moment, the “Big Ticket” will receive one of the best honors a professional athlete can receive. New owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez have brought a new dynamic to the team, and it was a matter of time before they did Garnett right.
