Brooklyn Nets rookie forward Drake Powell will not play on Sunday against the Toronto Raptors due to a right ankle sprain, the team announced on Saturday.

Powell sustained the injury in the first quarter on Thursday during a 106-95 loss to the Miami Heat at the Barclays Center. He was ruled out of returning to the contest after 3 minutes, 56 seconds of action, recording three rebounds off the bench.

Nets coach Jordi Fernández didn’t know the severity of the injury after the game on Thursday. With the team off on Friday and Saturday, the next update on the injury will likely come during Fernández’s pregame press conference on Sunday.

Powell is averaging six points, 1.9 assists and 1.8 rebounds on 37.8% shooting from 3-point range in 19 games with the Nets. He has scored in double figures four times, including a 15-point effort on Nov. 24 in a loss to the New York Knicks.

The 22nd pick also logged two appearances with the Long Island Nets in the G League earlier this month, averaging seven points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. He is among four first-round picks on the team who have suited up in the G League.

Powell will miss his fifth game due to a sprained right ankle on Sunday after previously dealing with that injury twice earlier this season. The team will likely take a cautious approach and not rush him back from his rehabilitation to prevent further injury.
