After Flip Saunders tragically died (Oct. 25, 2015), Kevin Garnett’s relationship with the Minnesota Timberwolves quickly deteriorated beyond repair, mostly due to the visceral hatred he’s developed for longtime MN Timberwolves owner, Glen Taylor.
But now, the Wolves have new owners for the first time since 1994. And for years now, new majority partners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez have been slowly trying to fix the blown up bridge that used to connect Garnett to the Minnesota Timberwolves organization.
MN Timberwolves reuniting with Kevin Garnett
Wolves fans want to see his uniform in the rafters at Target Center, and they want their favorite NBA team to reunite with a local superstar that touched the hearts of fans in Minnesota like VERY few athletes have, both before and after him. And according to Shams Charania (ESPN), we are about to get all that and more.
On Thursday morning, Shams is reporting that Kevin Garnett is being hired by the Minnesota Timberwolves in “an all-encompassing role involving business, community efforts and content development”. Of note, his new deal seems to include an overdue jersey retirement ceremony.

The last time the greatest player in franchise history was happy to step foot in Target Center goes back before the tragic death of Flip Saunders ten years ago — just three days before Minnesota tipped off their 2015-16 regular season.
Garnett lasted three months with the Wolves, after Flip’s passing. His last NBA game was played on January 23, 2016, a 106-101 Timberwolves victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. A 39-year-old KG scored 2 points in 9 minutes that night, then was marked inactive for Minnesota’s final 36 games.
Timing of Garnett hire couldn’t be more perfect
KG is coming aboard at the perfect time. The Minnesota Timberwolves are at arguably the most important point in franchise history. Anthony Edwards is a 24-year-old superstar that is continuing to blossom in this league, trying to lead the Wolves to places Garnett never could… on the court.
Not only is Kevin Garnett an NBA Hall of Famer, but after 12 years in Minnesota, he went to Boston and won a ring. Now, he’ll look to share that experience with a Timberwolves team on the brink of doing the same thing.
