Washington Wizards star faces health setback after being diagnosed with blood clotCam Whitmore faces health issues (Image via NBA) According to ESPN’s Shams Charania on Tuesday, Cam Whitmore, a forward for the Washington Wizards, is out due to problems with his right shoulder. The team announced that Whitmore’s deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder will keep him out indefinitely. The team’s physicians examined him more closely, performed tests, and discovered a blood clot that led to the diagnosis after he missed a few games due to a hurting shoulder. Whitmore had missed the previous six games, the last two of which were especially caused by right shoulder pain. A more thorough examination revealed that Whitmore had DVT.

Cam Whitmore’s season is put on hold after Washington Wizards forward faces health issues

Cam Whitmore had a chance to flourish after being traded from a deep Houston roster to Washington last summer. After 21 games, that chance has ended. ESPN insider Shams Charania announced the same on X and wrote: “Washington Wizards forward Cam Whitmore is out indefinitely after being diagnosed with upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, sources tell ESPN..”He further wrote:“Whitmore had missed the past few games with shoulder soreness and further testing revealed the blood clot. He joined the Wizards via trade in an increased opportunity and had started working closely with coach Brian Keefe in recent weeks as part of his development plan…”The official team also announced the same on X. The announcement read: “G/F Cam Whitmore has been diagnosed with upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis. Whitmore was evaluated after missing the previous two games with right shoulder soreness. Whitmore is expected to be sidelined indefinitely. His progress and recovery will be monitored, and his status will be updated as appropriate..”Whitmore is the third NBA player to miss time due to deep vein thrombosis in the past 12 months, albeit there is no estimated time of return. Then-Bucks star Damian Lillard missed the last month of the previous season due to deep vein thrombosis in his calf, and Spurs standout Victor Wembanyama missed the second half of the 2024–25 season due to the same condition.NBA players are increasingly experiencing DVT, which can result in blood clots in the veins of the arms or legs. Damian Lillard lost time last season due to a blood clot found in his calf.

Cam Whitmore’s season is put on hold just as a fresh start in Washington began to take shape

Whitmore, a former Rockets first-round selection, was traded to Washington during the previous offseason. He has averaged 9.2 points in 16.9 minutes per game thus far this season for the cellar-dwelling Wizards, who had the worst record in the NBA going into play on Tuesday (5-22). Whitmore was playing for the Wizards for around 17 minutes a night, scoring 9.2 points per game while shooting 45.6% from the field. Whitmore had recently been working more closely with Wizards coach Brian Keefe on a growth plan and finding a role in Washington, despite rumors of dubious practice habits following him.For Whitmore, this is a regrettable development. After a difficult couple of seasons to begin his career, he was traded by Houston this offseason due to a backlog in the front court following the arrival of Kevin Durant. Given that Whitmore recently turned 21 and Washington appeared willing to give him a long leash as a rebuilding team, there was a chance that this off-season’s change of scenery would be quite advantageous for him.In the third year of his rookie contract, Whitmore is earning $3.5 million this season. He is eligible for an extension next summer and has a $5.5 million contract for the upcoming season. Now that Whitmore’s health is the Wizards’ first priority, that endeavor has been halted. The young wing is in a frightening condition; hopefully, he recovers as quickly as possible. Also read: Is Mitchell Robinson playing today?
