Victor Wembanyama is the biggest young NBA star at the moment; none of his peers come close to the hype around him. The San Antonio Spurs are winning this season, too, meaning the spotlight is even brighter. But one Thunder superstar often earns Wembanyama comparisons, although it seems the Frenchman disagrees.
Wemby might be an alien, but the Oklahoma City Thunder have a star who comes close. Chet Holmgren is a 7-footer who is an offensive threat and a defensive monster. He’s also already a champion. Comparisons with Wembanyama have been rife, but the Spurs man thinks they don’t make sense.

I asked Victor Wembanyama (in French) whether he considers there to be any rivalry between him and Chet Holmgren, and he was pretty clear:
“No, I don’t think about that. At least from a basketball standpoint, there’s no comparison (between us)”.

“No, I don’t think about that. At least from a basketball standpoint, there’s no comparison,” Wembanyama told a reporter when asked about a potential rivalry between the two.
San Antonio recently beat the Thunder twice, the only team in the NBA to do that so far this season. Wemby is still working his way back to full fitness after injury, and the Spurs are looking good. No wonder the Frenchman is feeling confident enough to make a statement like this, even if he meant it harmlessly.

The two have faced off in six NBA games so far. Both teams have won three out of six of those contests. Wembanyama has higher statistical averages in every category head-to-head except steals. Holmgren is far from a scrub, but as their careers go on, Wemby’s ‘no comparison’ take is likely to age well.
