Former Brooklyn Nets guard Ben Simmons has not yet played in the NBA this season as he was presumably looking for the right opportunity to continue his playing career. Brooklyn bought out Simmons’ contract after the trade deadline of the 2024-25 season and he finished the season with the Los Angeles Clippers. However, it looks like Simmons may have entered into the next phase of his life.

Simmons recently became the controlling operator of the South Florida Sails Angling Club, a professional sports fishing team, according to the Sports Fishing Championship (SFC). According to Front Office Sports’ post on X, Simmons joins a list of athletes from different sports that have an ownership stake within the Sports Fishing Championship, including former NFL legend Randy Moss, Las Vegas Raiders running back Raheem Mostert, and professional golfer Scottie Scheffler.

“I have always believed that investing in what you love means you have a responsibility to help move it forward. Sportfishing has given me incredible experiences, and SFC is creating a platform that treats offshore fishing like the elite sport it is,” Simmons said, per the SFC. Simmons having ownership in the SFC does not preclude him from continuing his NBA career, but it seems like he is taking his time while waiting for an opportunity to come along.

Simmons, 29, spent essentially three seasons with the Nets after being acquired from the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2021-22 season in a trade that sent James Harden away from Brooklyn. Simmons’ time with the Nets was disappointing given that he wasn’t able to regain the All-Star form that he did during his days with the 76ers, mostly due to back injuries that he needed multiple surgeries to address.

In 90 games played in Brooklyn, Simmons averaged 6.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game while shooting 56.2% from the field and 50.0% from the free-throw line. Time will tell if Simmons will get another chance to play in the NBA, especially since he reportedly declined a minimum contract offer from the New York Knicks heading into this season, but in the meantime, Simmons is exploring ownership in one of his favorite sports.
