Former Auburn forward Chaney Johnson has played well this season in the G-League, and it has not gone unnoticed. On Friday, the Brooklyn Nets signed Johnson to a two-way contract.
During the G-League Tip-off Tournament, the Cleveland Charge are 10-4 with Johnson playing well for the team. He is averaging 13.1 points per game and 5.6 rebounds in the tournament. He has also shown great improvement from college in the three-point shot. He is shooting 36% versus the 29% he shot in his two seasons at Auburn. In regular season competition, the Cleveland Charge are 2-0 with Johnson scoring 10.5 points and 4 rebounds.
Johnson was one of the unsung heroes for the Tigers during their run to the Final Four last season. In his final college season, he averaged 9.1 points per game and 4.9 rebounds. His best game in the NCAA Tournament came against Alabama State in the first round, where he scored 13 points in the Tigers’ 83-63 victory. Johnson added some key buckets in the Tigers’ 70-64 win over Michigan State in the Elite 8. Earlier in the season, he filled in for Johni Broome and scored 17 points versus Mississippi State for an 88-66 victory.
Before joining Auburn, he played three seasons at the University of Alabama-Huntsville, averaging 13.7 points per game, and was named the 2023 Gulf South Conference Player of the Year. After his college career was over, he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He will be joining a Nets team that is currently No. 13 in the NBA Eastern Conference standings with a 9-19 record. Â
