A busy Friday night of games on the L-L League girls basketball schedule, including a 4-pack of section tilts as teams started coming back from the holiday breather. Here’s the roundup, with plenty of notables:
SECTION 2
Cocalico 56, Elizabethtown 27 — The host Eagles soared to a 28-14 lead at the half, and then opened up plenty of breathing room with a 20-7 third-quarter blitz, as Cocalico improved to 8-1 in its last nine games. Corrine Fair (four 3-pointers, 14 points) and Abbey Eppinette (season-high 10 points) paced the Eagles’ offense, while Elleyana Handran scored 9 points for the Bears.Â
Solanco 47, Garden Spot 36 — The host Golden Mules used a 15-2 second-quarter spree to snag a 26-16 lead at the half, and then sauntered past the Spartans to improve to 4-1 in their last five games. Jaelyn Gonzalez (season-high 18 points), Saskia Ludgate (13 points) and Layne Dawley (three 3-pointers, 10 points) keyed Solanco; Laina Steiner scored 14 points for Garden Spot.Â
Also in Section 2 on Friday, a first-place tie was snapped when Warwick topped Ephrata in Lititz. Here’s the story:Â
NONLEAGUE
Manheim Township 55, Conestoga Valley 46 — That’s nine victories in a row for the host Blue Streaks, who made their 28-22 halftime lead against the Buckskins stand up. Ciniya Robinson (three 3-pointers, 21 points) and Emiline Brandt (career-high 16 points) paced Township; Riley Heller scored 10 points for CV.Â
Lebanon 62, Donegal 35 — The Cedars snapped off a 28-15 first-half run, and then closed the game on an 18-5 clip to down the host Indians. L-L scoring leader Olive Brandt — three 3-pointers, 10-for-10 at the foul line — poured in 33 points, Tayana Camuy matched her season-high with 12 points, and Nina Harrison chipped in with 10 points for Lebanon. Hailey Bomberger bucketed three 3-pointers and scored 13 points for Donegal. FYI: Brandt has a league-best 37 treys, and she’s averaging 24.8 points with a league-leading 67 free-throws made.
Red Lion 50, Hempfield 15 — Interestingly, the Black Knights and the host Lions played for the second time in the last three days, this time in a nonleague clash. Red Lion KO’d Hempfield 51-25 in the championship game of Northeastern York’s holiday tournament on Tuesday. Friday, the Lions, who are No. 1 in the D3-6A power ratings, raced out to a 33-6 lead at the break and never looked back. Asheion Burgess scored 8 points for the Knights.Â
Pottsville 33, Elco 17 — At Martz Hall, the host Crimson Tide had a 7-0 lead after the first quarter and held the Raiders to 2 first-half points. Pottsville closed the game on a 13-5 spurt to seal it. Kenzie Eckhart scored 8 points for Elco.Â
Governor Mifflin 52, Lampeter-Strasburg 42 — The Pioneers had a 30-27 lead at the half, but couldn’t slam the door in Shillington. The host Mustangs grabbed the lead for good with a 16-6 third-quarter binge and protected home court. Elaina Hostetter (13 points), Lucy Boyd (10 points) and Trinity Carter (10 points) paced L-S, which has a late game — 8:45 p.m. — on Saturday at West York. And then the Pioneers, who were joined atop the Section 3 race when Manheim Central won at Lancaster Catholic on Friday, have a first-place showdown in Manheim on Monday.Â
Also Friday, Penn Manor dropped a 55-35 nonleague decision at reigning D3-6A champ Dallastown.Â
