CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WHSV) – Grottoes native and Fort Defiance High School graduate Dell Curry will have his No. 30 jersey retired by the Charlotte Hornets, the team announced Wednesday.
Curry, a 1982 Fort Defiance graduate, will become just the second player in franchise history to receive the honor. The ceremony is scheduled for March 19 when the Hornets host the Orlando Magic at Spectrum Center.
A key figure during the most successful era in Hornets history, Curry spent 10 seasons with the franchise from 1988–98. He retired as Charlotte’s all-time leader in games played (701), points (9,839), field goals made (3,951) and three-point field goals (929). One of the NBA’s most prolific reserves, Curry was named Sixth Man of the Year in 1994 and ranks third all-time in NBA bench scoring.
Before his NBA career, Curry starred at Virginia Tech, where he averaged 19.0 points per game and finished with the second-highest scoring total in school history. He went on to play 16 NBA seasons with five teams.
Curry is also the father of NBA stars Stephen Curry and Seth Curry. He remains part of the Hornets organization as the team’s television analyst and ambassador.
The Hornets’ only other retired jersey belongs to Bobby Phills.
