Atlanta Hawks rookie Asa Newell registered his first double-double in the G League on Wednesday, leading the College Park Skyhawks in a home loss to the Maine Celtics.
Newell finished with a career-high 29 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and three blocked shots in the 121-115 defeat at Gateway Center Arena. He went 10-of-20 from the field, including 3-of-9 from 3-point range, in 35 minutes, 48 seconds of work.
The 23rd overall pick is one of two players to record at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks in a game this season in the G League. He accounted for 17 points in the second half alone as the Skyhawks nearly overcame a 26-point down the stretch.
Newell has played sporadically for the Hawks, averaging 5.2 points and 1.9 rebounds in 33 appearances for coach Quin Snyder. He is one of 15 rookies to register a double-double this season after recording 12 points and 10 rebounds on Oct. 25.
The 20-year-old is averaging 20.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists while shooting 56% shooting from the field in five games with the Skyhawks. He has scored at least 14 points in each appearance, including a 27-point outing on Dec. 2.

Newell has impressed in spurts throughout the first half of the season and earned the trust of his teammates. The team will continue to explore opportunities for him in the G League as it looks to maximize his development throughout the season.
