OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Ed Servais’ retirement plans will have to wait.
Creighton baseball defeated UConn, 7-4, to capture the Big East Tournament championship and the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 2019. The Bluejays will learn their tournament matchup on Selection Monday at 11:00am.
Servais, who is coaching his final season after 22 years in Omaha, clinches his sixth NCAA Tournament in his Creighton tenure.
Dakota Duffalo opened the scoring with a third inning solo homer that sailed over the left field scoreboard.
UConn tied it up in the top of the fifth with a solo shot from Caleb Shpur. But the Huskies melted down in the bottom half of the frame. After allowing the first three Bluejays to reach base, Ian Cooke plunked Kyle Hess to force home the go-ahead run. A Tate Gillen sac fly tacked on an insurance run to make it 3-1 Creighton.
After two more sac flies in the sixth and seventh, Gillen put the game out of reach with a two-run double in the eighth to establish a five-run edge.
UConn’s Ryan Daniels opened the ninth with a monster two-run homer to bring the Huskies within three. Garrett Langrell prevented further damage, getting a ground ball to first. Will MacLean made a diving play at first to beat the runner and clinch the tournament victory.
