CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cavs return home Friday night looking to stabilize themselves against a Sacramento team that should not threaten them.
Cleveland enters the matchup at 25-20, sitting sixth in the Eastern Conference, while the Kings arrive at Rocket Arena with a 12-33 record. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Eastern.
Sacramento has struggled to find footing on either end of the floor all season. The Kings come in with the third-worst offense and defense in the NBA, pairing that inefficiency with the league’s second-worst net rating at minus-9.7 per 100 possessions.
Although, over their last seven games the Kings are 4-3 with wins over the Rockets, Lakers and Knicks. During that stretch they’ve held the seventh-best offensive rating led by the second-best field goal percentage (51.1%) and best 3-point percentage (40.3%) — an area the Cavs have struggled significantly this season — in the league.
This is a game the Cavs cannot afford to approach casually. Cleveland has shown a habit of playing to the level of its competition, especially when injuries thin the rotation and offensive execution becomes fragile.
The Kings will be mostly intact, though they will be without Keegan Murray because of an ankle sprain. Cleveland’s availability situation remains unchanged. Darius Garland continues to miss time with a toe injury, while Sam Merrill and Max Strus are sidelined with hand and foot injuries, respectively. That reality puts added pressure on Donovan Mitchell to carry the offense and on Evan Mobley to assert himself consistently, especially against a defense that has struggled to contain interior scoring.
For the Cavs, this matchup is less about the opponent. Defensive focus, ball movement and sustained energy across all four quarters remain the benchmarks.
