SAN ANTONIO — As a winter freeze continues on, South Texas communities struggle with a low supply of blood donations due to hazardous driving conditions lowering donation rates. To help encourage people to donate, the San Antonio Spurs are offering free tickets to an upcoming game.
Anyone who donates blood to a South Texas Blood & Tissue center in the San Antonio area from Monday, Jan. 26, to Thursday, Jan. 29, will receive a free ticket to see the Spurs take on the Orlando Magic on Feb. 1, the organization says. To qualify, donors must use the promo code “TICKET” when scheduling their donation.
According to South Texas Blood & Tissue, blood donations can help many people, from cancer patients to accident victims and those living with blood disorders. The organization says one of those patients is Lyric, a 10-year-old battling sickle cell disease.
“Lyric endures excruciating, crippling pain day and night that she describes as stabbing and so severe it causes her to scream. Blood transfusions are the only thing that brings her relief.
“‘You’re doing more than you could even imagine as far as saving a life when you donate blood,’ said Shanice, Lyric’s mother. ‘It affects people in so many ways. For sickle cell, it’s our lifeline.’”
