All three Sixers stars looked the part Tuesday night.
Paul George, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey each played a major role in the team’s 139-122 win over the Bucks at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
George posted 32 points, five assists and five rebounds.
Embiid had 29 points, nine boards and five assists. Maxey tallied 22 points and nine assists.
Myles Turner scored 31 points for the 18-27 Bucks. Ryan Rollins added 24.
Quentin Grimes was out for the Sixers with a right ankle sprain. Milwaukee was down Giannis Antetokounmpo (right calf sprain), Kevin Porter Jr. (right oblique muscle strain) and Taurean Prince (neck surgery).
The 25-21 Sixers will host the Kings on Thursday night. Here are observations on their win vs. Milwaukee:
Embiid right back to dominating
Early three-pointers by George and VJ Edgecombe helped the Sixers build a 9-2 lead. George and Embiid returned after sitting out the first leg of the Sixers’ back-to-back, a non-contest Monday in Charlotte that the Hornets won by 37 points.
Edgecombe provided good energy in the opening minutes, crashing for offensive rebounds, hustling after loose balls and blocking Bucks big man Bobby Portis inside. The rookie’s effort mattered a day after the Sixers played with very little juice. However, he had to exit with 8:40 left in the first quarter when he picked up his second foul.
Turner had an aggressive start offensively. He reached 10 points in a little over six minutes with an and-one layup on Embiid.
For good reason, Embiid played the whole first quarter. He posted 18 points and three assists in the period. Embiid was also physical and opportunistic on the offensive glass. He racked up six offensive rebounds in the first.
The seven-time All-Star’s first points of the second quarter had Maxey literally jumping for joy. The two teamed up on an alley-oop slam and both celebrated gleefully.
McCain gets rolling
With Grimes’ absence and Edgecombe’s foul trouble, the Sixers made multiple changes to their usual rotation. Jared McCain checked in for Edgecombe and Justin Edwards was the second Sixer off the bench.
Both McCain and Edwards drained catch-and-shoot threes on their first shots of the night. McCain added a driving layup and two assists in an extended first stint.
Perhaps his garbage-time success in Charlotte served as a bit of a springboard for a player who’s been low on reps and rhythm much of this season. He had an excellent outing and displayed the considerable shooting talent that propelled him to such a bright start to his rookie season, posting 17 points (6 for 8 from the floor) and three assists in 24 minutes.
Following his start against the Hornets, Dominick Barlow didn’t enter until the 7:58 mark of the second quarter. He clearly wasn’t shaken at all by a different role. Seconds after entering, Barlow grabbed a missed Adem Bona free throw and kicked the ball out to Edgecombe, who sunk a three. Barlow snagged four offensive rebounds in the second quarter and the Sixers built a lead as large as 13 points.
Tons of George jumpers
George had a sweet-shooting start to the second half, scoring 10 points in the first four minutes of the third quarter.
However, the Sixers’ defense struggled to find stops. Embiid wasn’t nearly as sharp either. A pair of Kyle Kuzma free throws evened the game at 81-all.
Offensively, the Sixers executed at a high level for most of the night. When the Bucks played zone defense in the third quarter, Edgecombe knocked down an open corner three and Embiid drilled a mid-range jumper.
George kept launching all kinds of jumpers and nailed two long-distance shots late in the third quarter. Wide open or tightly guarded, he seemed to be justified in letting it fly.
McCain was also on fire early in the fourth quarter. He swished a corner three to stretch the Sixers’ lead to 126-104.
The Bucks cut their deficit to a dozen points and Embiid subbed back in with 4:04 to play. He promptly canned a three in front of the Bucks’ bench. George wound up one short of tying his career best for threes in a game, but he set a new high as a Sixer with a fantastic 9-for-15 evening from long range.
