Tyrese Haliburton said the moment came during a film session when coaches and veteran players addressed the reality that not everyone on the roster would play.
He explained that LeBron James referenced his own experience from the 2004 Olympics as part of the discussion.
“We’re in the back doing film and we have the team meeting where we acknowledge that all 12 guys can not play,” Haliburton said.

“Steve starts talking everybody can’t play, Bron is talking how he didn’t play in the ’04 Olympics that much, KD is over there saying we’re all 12 All-Stars, everybody is good.”
Haliburton said it was not immediately obvious who the message applied to until the session continued.
“I’m sitting there listening and I’m like yeah,” Haliburton said. “As we start film I’m like, but who are they talking about? I’m looking around like, he’s not talking about him, he’s not talking about him. I’m like ahhh, they talking bout me.”

Tyrese Haliburton said the experience was humbling but ultimately shaped how he viewed international competition and leadership within the squad.

He described the moment as difficult but necessary given the depth of the roster. He said the message reinforced that individual roles must sometimes be sacrificed for the team.
Haliburton explained that James’ willingness to share his own Olympic disappointment helped frame the situation.
Despite the disappointment, Haliburton said the experience remains meaningful. He described representing Team USA at the Olympics as one of the most significant moments of his career.
