The Toronto Raptors’ time to land NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo may have finally arrived.

The Raptors have been linked to Antetokounmpo in the past, though it always felt like a pipe dream. That may no longer be the case.

There had been rumours of a rift between Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks for some time, and things finally seem to have reached a boiling point. As per ESPN’s Shams Charania, the two-time MVP is expected to be moved by the trade deadline or the upcoming offseason.

The Raptors, who have surprised many with a 29-19 record on the season, are currently being given the sixth-best odds by Bodog to land Antetokounmpo at +800.

Antetokounmpo would immediately turn the Raptors into a serious contender, though acquiring him wouldn’t be easy, as plenty of teams will be showing interest in the 10-time All-Star.

Any package from the Raptors would likely start with 24-year-old Scottie Barnes, who is blossoming into a superstar in his own right. Another piece from the Raptors roster, such as Jakob Poeltl, would also likely need to be included. There would also need to be a number of draft picks headed the Bucks’ way.

That would be a very heavy price to pay, though one can certainly understand why.

At the age of 31, Antetokounmpo is still very much in the prime of his career. Through 30 games this season, he’s averaging 28 points with 10 rebounds and 5.6 assists. Incredibly, those numbers are actually slightly lower than what he’s provided in each of the past six seasons, showing just how consistently dominant he is.

Whether the Raptors are the team to land him or not remains to be seen, but this fan base should expect to hear plenty more speculation between now and the Feb. 5 trade deadline.
