Boston Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum may not be rushing his return to the court as he continues to rehab from a torn Achilles.
Per NBA insider Chris Haynes, Tatum is “re-evaluating” the situation and is considering sitting out the entire 2025-26 season.
There was no indication from Haynes’ report that Tatum suffered any sort of setback and no final decision about his status has been determined.
Tatum suffered a torn Achilles tendon in the second round of last season’s playoffs against the New York Knicks and underwent surgery on May 13, but the Celtics didn’t rule him out for the 2025-26 campaign.
During the Dec. 24 episode of The Hoop Collective, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported that Tatum “is determined to play” this season. The six-time All-Star has also shown off his impressive recovery progress in social media videos.
More recently, Tatum took part in an hour-long workout in front of the media that saw him go through shooting drills, took on contact with Celtics assistant ony Dobbins acting as the defender and was able to throw down a few dunks.
Despite being without their leader, the Celtics have played inspired basketball this season. Boston’s 29-18 record is tied with the New York Knicks for second in the Eastern Conference.
The Celtics’ impressive year seemed like it would more motivation for Tatum to get back sooner rather than later, but it’s also more important for both parties to prioritize his long-term health.
In 72 games last season, he led the team with averages of 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 6.0 assists, and he upped his production in the playoffs to 28.1 points, 11.5 rebounds and 5.4 assists in eight postseason games before his injury.
Jaylen Brown has taken his game to another level with Tatum out of action. The 2024 NBA Finals MVP is averaging career highs of 29.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game as the team’s No. 1 option.
The Celtics will continue to be cautious with Tatum’s recovery, especially since they look like a strong playoff contender right now.
