After dropping 45 points in the opening frame and securing an eight-point lead in the opening frame, the Detroit Pistons pressed the gas and never looked back on Friday night against the Golden State Warriors. Behind their high-powered offense led by Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren, the Pistons sped to a lead as big as 20 points against the Warriors.
Things got worse for the Warriors in the third quarter when Steph Curry exited the court and was ruled out for the remainder of the game due to right knee soreness. Despite trailing by double figures and Curry sidelined along with Jimmy Butler and Jonathan Kuminga, the Warriors wouldn’t wave the white flag.
After cutting Detroit’s advantage down from 20 to 13 to start the fourth quarter, the Warriors kept chipping away at the Pistons. Led by Buddy Hield and De’Anthony Melton, the Warriors surged back into the game, trimming Detroit’s lead down to only three points with just over six minutes remaining.
Despite their late run, the Warriors struggled to land the final haymaker to close the gap on the Pistons. Each time the Warriors cut their lead down to four points, the Pistons would answer with a bucket of their own as they were able to close out the game, 131-124.
Eight different members of the Warriors scored in double figures on Friday, with Curry leading the way with 23 points. Melton continued his strong stretch of play, scoring 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field with five boards and three assists in 26 minutes off the bench.
