The deal creates a $7 million trade exception for Charlotte, which acquired Jones from the Orlando Magic on Wednesday for two second-round picks and cash considerations.

Branham was briefly sent to Dallas as part of the Anthony Davis trade. He spent the first three years of his career with the San Antonio Spurs, who took him No. 20 overall in the 2022 NBA Draft.

But he was traded to the Washington Wizards last offseason after his role in San Antonio decreased. Branham played in 28 games in Washington, averaging 4.6 points. He gets a fresh start with the Hornets.

Jones now heads to Dallas for a clearer path to playing time. He was reportedly one of the Mavericks’ top targets in free agency last offseason before signing with the Magic.

The Hornets have revamped their backcourt at the trade deadline. Charlotte traded Collin Sexton, Ousmane Dieng and three second-round picks to the Chicago Bulls for Coby White and Mike Conley. The team waived Conley this afternoon.

Charlotte acquired Dieng from the Oklahoma City Thunder for Mason Plumlee and a second-round pick. The Hornets also waived guard Pat Connaughton yesterday.

General Manager Jeff Peterson has one open roster spot to work with. He could agree to a deal before the trade deadline ends or search the buyout market. Two-way center PJ Hall could be promoted to long-term deal, as the Hornets only have two centers on standard contracts.
