The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was officially launched in 2007, and Nike’s first partnership with the organisation arrived just one year later. The fund is named for the late Sandra Kay Yow, who spent 38 trailblazing years passionately advocating and transforming women’s basketball. She was head coach of the North Carolina State University women’s basketball team, a founding member and president of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), the coach of the gold-winning 1988 Olympic team, and has been inducted into multiple Halls of Fame, including the Naismith. She passed away in 2009 having spent 22 years fighting breast cancer – and left an enormous, galvanising legacy within the sport.
