Anthony Davis still has a chance to debut for the Washington Wizards this season.

Wizards general manager Will Dawkins said on Sunday that he expects Davis to return from his hand and groin injuries this season, according to Yahoo Sports’ Ian Nicholas Quillen.

“The plan for AD right now is to go back to Dallas and finish his rehab,” Dawkins said. “During All-Star break, he takes another visit for a doctor. And that’s a big appointment for us to kind of see where his progress is at.”

This comes after NBA insider Chris Haynes reported on Saturday that Davis was expected to sit out the remainder of this season to allow his injuries to fully heal.

The Wizards acquired Davis prior to the trade deadline on Thursday as part of an eight-player deal with the Dallas Mavericks.

Washington made the move knowing that Davis’ status for the remainder of the season was in question. He suffered a hand injury late in the fourth quarter of Dallas’ 116-114 loss to the Utah Jazz on Jan. 8.

The Mavericks announced on Jan. 13 that Davis wouldn’t require surgery and he was expected to heal from the injury in approximately six weeks.

Even though a six-week recovery period would put Davis’ return timeline around late-February or early-March, the Wizards’ position in the standings made the decision for him to avoid feeling the need to rush back.

Davis’ career has been knocked off track due to a series of injuries. He only played 31 out of a possible 85 games with the Mavs, including two play-in tournament games last season, after being acquired from the Los Angeles Lakers as part of the Luka Dončić trade.

The 32-year-old said after the trade to Washington that he looks forward to meeting with members of the front office to hear their vision for the future, but he is encouraged by a lot of things they are doing.

Davis was the second notable in-season trade acquisition for the Wizards. They acquired Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks on Jan. 8. Young, who has been out of action since Dec. 27 due to a quad injury, isn’t expected to make his Washington debut until after the All-Star break.

“He’s still working on the court,” Dawkins said, per Quillen. “He started doing 1-on-0, he started doing a little bit of more 2-on-2 type actions. … He’s trending in a positive direction.”

The Wizards are currently 14th in the Eastern Conference standings with a 14-37 record.
