Injury bug bites Gresham girls basketball

To open the fourth quarter, on a night when not a whole lot was going right, Gresham girls basketball started to surge.

Down 15 points to visiting David Douglas, the short-handed Gophers strung together a series of to cut into the lead. The mini-run was largely spurred by a pair of seniors — JoJo Tubania Askay and Skyla Hansen. They both scored early, Askay assisted junior guard Naomi Otanez on a corner 3-pointer, and then Hansen got a steal and layup to make it 43-34 with momentum firmly in Gresham’s hands.

But then it all fizzled. Hansen fouled out of the game at the 4:17 mark — it was an unlucky fifth whistle after she couldn’t avoid a collision on an errant pass from a teammate. That loss, paired with a handful of turnovers and struggles rebounding, spoiled any late magic.

Gresham lost 55-38 to David Douglas Tuesday evening, Feb. 10, in a Mt. Hood Conference bout.

Game Stats

For Gresham (8-11, 3-6 League), Hansen had 8 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals; Otanez had 8 points (two 3-pointers); Askay added 7 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals; senior guard Kaleeah Keeton had 5 points and 6 rebounds; senior post Mama Falepapalangi had 2 points and 6 rebounds; and junior post Aspen Sheetz had 3 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks.

For David Douglas (4-15, 2-7 League), junior guard Almedina Omerovic had a game-high 24 points (six 3-pointers); sophomore guard Marley Higgins scored 19 points; and junior guard Angelique Hulstine added 7 points.

Gresham won the earlier matchup 45-36 in the opening week of League play.

Injury Bug

Adding to Gresham’s struggles was the loss of two key players. Freshman Naomi Richards and freshman Lute Falepapalangi were both sidelined with a boot after picking up injuries last week.

Richards, a 6-foot-1 post who is a walking double-double, has a high ankle sprain suffered in the second quarter against Nelson. While there is no timetable for her return, the coaches are confident she will be back out on the hardwood before the year is out.

Falepapalangi, the best Gresham shooter from deep and a menace on the fastbreak, picked up a knock against Barlow. Her timeline is much shorter to return — potentially as soon as Central Catholic this Friday.
