Speaking at a fan engagement event Tuesday night in Ocoee, Jalen Suggs called Wednesday’s game the toughest part of accomplishing Orlando‘s goal of going undefeated on its four-game homestand ahead of the NBA All-Star Break.

And the Magic guard wasn’t wrong.

Facing the Bucks for the second time in three days after it defeated Milwaukee by 19 points on Monday night, Jamahl Mosley‘s squad fought back and forth but fell late, 116-108, inside Kia Center to see its three-game winning streak come to an end.

“You’ve got to give Milwaukee a ton of credit for the way they came out and played,” Mosley said. “I think they set the tone physically in a lot of ways for the game.

“It’s hard to beat a team twice, especially when they make that type of adjustment,” he added. “They went big. We’ve got to continue to be better, grow from this and learn from this.”

In a contest that featured eight lead changes, Suggs (16 points) made a pair of free throws to pull his team within 110-108 with 1:12 left. Myles Turner then sank his lone 3-pointer of the night and Cam Thomas his fourth to help Milwaukee end on a 6-0 run.

The Bucks received a plethora of bench scoring, which was led by 34 points from Thomas (who scored 15 in the third quarter). Ousmane Dieng also hit 5 of his 8 3-pointers as he added 17 points and Milwaukee’s reserves outscored Orlando’s 55-25.

Although Milwaukee (22-30) turned the ball over 16 times for 13 Orlando points, it shot 24 for 24 at the free throw line.

The Magic (28-25) are off until Feb. 19 at Sacramento to open a four-game trip on the West Coast on the other side of the week-long league break.

Bane’s big night

Desmond Bane (31 points) came out firing when he knocked down his first five 3-pointers, scoring nine of the team’s first 14 points and posting 15 in the opening quarter.

His five first-quarter 3s tied the franchise record for most 3s made in a single quarter, something that was last done by former Orlando center Mo Bamba during the second quarter of a Jan. 9, 2022, game at Philadelphia.

Bane had 20 points by halftime but was held scoreless in the third quarter. He added 11 in the final frame when he became the 11th player in franchise history with eight-plus 3-pointers in a game.

“Having a full lineup, there’s so many weapons out there, so many guys that can touch the paint. … It really opens up a lot of opportunities to get catch-and-shoot shots,” Bane said. “As the season goes on we’re just continuing to find ways to help each other and play to each other’s strengths.”

The Magic guard found himself in foul trouble late when he picked up his fourth foul with 7:34 left in the game and his fifth with 5:42 remaining, but that didn’t slow him down from scoring 30-plus for a seventh time this season.

Rest of starters

Although Franz Wagner was available in his second game back from injury, Anthony Black remained in the starting lineup alongside regulars Bane, Suggs, Paolo Banchero and Wendell Carter Jr.

Suggs and Carter shot a combined 2 for 11 in the first half but did work elsewhere as the Magic center grabbed eight rebounds and Suggs dished out six assists before the break.

Suggs made his presence felt on the other end of the floor again when he recorded at least one steal for the seventh straight game and at least one block in a fourth straight. Carter never found his footing on offense, shooting 1 for 7 with just 6 points in 31 minutes.

“I thought for the most part, the ball was popping,” Suggs said. “There was a couple of defensive lapses that in the moment … there may not be a ton but they kind of accumulate. Especially in the fourth quarter, you want to get rid of those.”

Playing with his right index finger wrapped up after it was jammed by a blocked ball last game, Banchero hit a corner 3-pointer early but shot 2 for 6 distance. After a seven-point first half, he notched eight points in the third quarter alone to end with 17.

Black hit three 3s to finish with 13 points alongside three rebounds and three assists, but he turned the ball over twice. He didn’t play in the fourth quarter.

Wagner’s woes

Coming off the bench for the second game in a row and just the second time in his career, Wagner didn’t have as much success as he did in the first game against the Bucks.

Playing under a minutes restriction that included mainly 3-to-4-minute stints, the German forward shot 1 for 7 from the floor, including 1 for 5 from distance, to score just five points in 21 minutes.

His older brother, Moe Wagner, did a little bit of everything, racking up 12 points, five rebounds and four assists in 17 minutes in reserve.

Rookie watch

First-round pick Jase Richardson saw seven minutes of action and hit lone 3-point attempt of the night late in the third quarter.

Second-round pick Noah Penda entered the game five minutes into the second quarter but saw just four minutes of action.
