You thought Monday was bad? The 76ers lost in Portland by 17 points after trailing by as much as 28 in the third quarter. Then came Wednesday and a loss that was far worse than Monday.
The 76ers’ 49-point margin of defeat against the Knicks was the 6th-worst in franchise history and 3rd-worst at home.
This game was so bad we had no choice but to try something new – welcome to the debut of Roob’s 10 76ers Stats, with a huge shout-out to Stathead.
1. With the 135-118 on Monday at Moda Center in Portland and the 138-89 loss to the Knicks Wednesday at Xfinity Mobile Center, the 76ers have now allowed 135 or more points in back-to-back games for the first time in 38 years. In 1988, they allowed 136 and 135 on back-to-back nights, both times against the Knicks. On Nov. 18, they beat the Knicks 137-135 at the Spectrum and the next night they lost 141-122 at Madison Square Garden. Those two games and the loss Wednesday night are the last three times the Knicks have scored 135 or more points vs. the 76ers.
2. The 49-point loss is the 6th-worst in franchise history and 3rd-worst ever at home. It’s their most lopsided loss in 11 years, since a 51-point loss – 119-68 – to the Spurs on Dec. 7, 2015 at what was then the Wells Fargo Center. Their only other worse loss at home was a 50-point loss to the Rockets – 124-74 – on March 18, 2007 at what was then the Wachovia Center.
3. The 66-point combined margin of defeat in their last two games – 17 in Portland, 49 vs. the Knicks – is 7th-largest in franchise history and largest in 12 years, since they lost back-to-back games against the Raptors at Air Canada Center in Toronto (120-88) and Mavericks at American Airlines Arena in Dallas (123-70) by a combined 85 points. That’s the largest two-game margin of defeat in 76ers history.
4. The 76ers allowed 22 3-pointers in Portland and 20 against the Knicks. This is only the third time in franchise history they’ve allowed at least 20 3’s in consecutive games. The 42 3s the 76ers have allowed the last two games are 6th-most in franchise history in a two-game span. Before this week, they had allowed 20 3-pointers in a game 20 times in franchise history. Now they’ve done it twice in 48 hours.
5. The Knicks made 14 more 3’s than the 76ers, who were just 6-for-32 from the stripe. This is the first time in 76ers history they’ve allowed at least 20 3’s and made six or fewer. The fewest they had previously made while allowing 20 or more was eight four times, most recently in a loss last February to the Celtics, who made 24.
6. The 273 points the 76ers have allowed over their last two games are 4th-most they’ve ever allowed in back-to-back games and five short of the record of 273 that they allowed in losses in 1993 to the Hawks (149-123) and Hornets (129). The only other times they allowed more were 277 last year in losses to Rockets and Thunder and 276 in those two 1988 losses to the Knicks.
7A. The Knicks had 41 assists Wednesday night and the 76ers had just 16. The 25-assist differential is largest in franchise history. The previous high came in a 139-105 loss to the Warriors last year at the Chase Center in San Francisco, when the Warriors had 41 assists and the 76ers had 17, a 24-assist differential. The Knicks’ 41 assists are tied for 10th-most ever against the 76ers and 5th-most in Philly. It’s the Knicks 6th-most assists ever and 2nd-most in the last 45 years. They had 45 assists in a 145-118 win over the Nuggets in Denver last year.
7B. The 76ers are only the fifth team in the last 25 years to allow an opponent to record 40 or more assists while recording just 16 of their own. The last time to do that was the Trail Blazers in a 139-77 loss to the Thunder at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City in 2024.
8. Jose Alvarado, playing his third game for the Knicks after getting traded by the Pelicans, made a career-high eight of the Knicks’ 3’s off the bench. That’s the 2nd-most 3’s ever against the 76ers by a player who didn’t start the game. In 2005, Donyell Marshall of the Raptors made 12 of 19 3’s off the bench in Toronto’s 128-110 win at Canada Center in Toronto. Alvarado hadn’t made more than three 3’s in his last 22 games.
9. The 76ers’ 3-point shooting – 6-for-32 for 18.8 percent is 9th-worst in franchise history (minimum 30 attempts). This was the first time in four years and only the fifth time in the last 15 years the 76ers have shot below 20 percent from 3 and allowed 45 percent or better. Last time it happened was in March 2022 at American Airlines Arena, when the 76ers shot 7-for-41 (17 percent) in a 99-82 loss to the Heat, who shot 13-for-28 (46 percent).
10. The Knicks also had 13 steals Wednesday, making this only the fifth time ever and the first time in 22 years a 76ers opponent has had 40 assists and 13 steals in a game. Last time it happened was April 1994, when the Celtics had 40 assists and 15 steals in a 135-112 win at the Spectrum. This is only the sixth time in NBA history any team has had 40 3’s, 40 assists and 13 steals in a game. It was accomplished most recently by the Warriors, who had 42 3’s, 42 assists and 17 steals in a 148-106 win over the Spurs at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio this past March.
