After weeks of speculation about a possible departure before the NBA trade deadline, the San Antonio Spurs officially parted ways with Jeremy Sochan on Wednesday.Â
The Polish forward, selected No. 9 overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, has now been waived and is free to sign with any team.
Sochan’s role diminished significantly this season. Once viewed as part of the Spurs’ long-term core, he fell completely out of head coach Mitch Johnson’s rotation and was reduced to a marginal role.Â
At the player’s request, San Antonio explored potential trade options but was unable to find a suitable deal.Â
Ultimately, the franchise decided to waive him, allowing the 22-year-old to choose his next destination in the coming days.
Sochan arrived in San Antonio in 2023 and showed flashes of promise during his rookie campaign, raising expectations that he would be a key piece of the Spurs’ rebuilding project.Â
However, injuries and a stalled developmental curve caused him to lose ground within the team’s plans.
Before the start of the current season, the two sides failed to reach an agreement on a long-term contract extension, a sign that a split could be looming.Â
Sochan had been set to become a restricted free agent in the summer of 2026, but that scenario has now changed dramatically.Â
By being waived midway through the 2025–26 season, he becomes immediately available on the open market.
According to ESPN, two teams have already expressed interest in signing him: the New York Knicks and the Phoenix Suns.
