The New York Knicks have signed former top-10 pick Jeremy Sochan to a minimum deal for the remainder of the season, per league sources.

Sochan, who the Spurs recently waived, will fill New York’s 15th roster spot.

League sources told The Athletic that the Knicks had interest in the 22-year-old at the NBA’s trade deadline but were unable to strike a deal with San Antonio. New York likes the defensive versatility, ballhandling and upside that the young Sochan may provide.

New York was able to hit the buyout market immediately after shedding salary last week in a series of trades that allowed the Knicks to get off of the contract of Guerschon Yabusele and add Jose Alvarado. Prior to the series of moves, New York wouldn’t have been able to jump into the buyout market until early April.

Sochan averaged just 12.8 minutes in 28 games this season for the Spurs, the team that drafted him ninth in 2022, after starting 23 times last season.

After the trade deadline, The Athletic reported that Sochan did not intend to ask for a buyout. However, that position changed over the past week, and as a result, the Spurs waived him on Wednesday.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said on Tuesday evening that nothing had changed in Sochan’s plan with the team, hours before he was waived.

“He’s been asked to be the role of defensive disruptor and to be a versatile piece offensively for us and nothing’s changed in that regard,” Johnson said. “I know that Jeremy wants to play more, like many of the people that are playing as much, and I am glad that he wants that. That’s a competitive mindset that you have to have to be successful in this league.”

Sochan is unlikely to play a big role for New York, but the team hopes he provides some front-court insurance as it prepares to make a deep postseason push.
