James Jones, 26, is accused of shooting a 17-year-old boy at the Love Bank Park Wednesday night.

ST. LOUIS — A man is accused of shooting a teen boy at a park in south St. Louis.

Thursday, prosecutors charged James Jones, 26, with first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Police said the shooting happened Wednesday night at around 7 p.m. at the basketball court of Love Bank Park.

The park is near the intersection of Nebraska and Cherokee Streets in the Benton Park West neighborhood.

According to a probable cause statement, police said Jones’ brother was in a “tussle” with two other people where punches were not thrown.

One of the people in the fight dropped a handgun, which Jones picked up and used to shoot the 17-year-old boy.

The victim was taken to the hospital and was in critical but stable condition.

A 16-year-old, who was not shot, received minor injuries and was in stable condition.

Jones was held in the City Justice Center with no bond. His next court appearance has not yet been scheduled.
