The San Antonio Spurs have long been one of the best teams in the NBA at evaluating and finding talent. Draft-day steals like Kawhi Leonard, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Dejounte Murray all stand out, but even with highly-touted players, the Spurs have no problem developing them.
Stephon Castle was expected to be one of the better rookies in the 2024 draft class, but he ended up with 92 of the possible 100 first-place votes for Rookie of the Year. Between him and Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs have one of the very best young cores in the NBA.

Castle understands that ROTY is an individual award, but he credits his teammates for helping him take home the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy.
“The guys that I was surrounded with every day, they made it super easy for me to just play my game, play comfortable, be confident in it,” Castle outlined. “The support that I get from those guys that, behind closed doors, nobody sees, is very impactful. So when I was having down games, good games, I would always get support from them, no matter what. So I feel like they’re a big part of the reason why I’m here.”
Undoubtedly, veterans like Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes played a massive role in his success, and in recent seasons, Keldon Johnson has stepped into a veteran role.
Castle knows that Brian Wright, RC Buford, and Gregg Popovich all can find and add quality talent around him and Wembanyama, and like Wemby, he has placed his faith in the front office.

“I think that just speaks super highly of our front office,” he continued. “It speaks highly of our future as well, what we have going on, and what we plan on doing here pretty soon.”
With a healthy Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox joining Castle next season, the Spurs are expected to be in the running for the postseason.
