The Philadelphia 76ers are expected to add Cam Payne to the roster for the second time in his career.

Since December, Payne has been under contract with Partizan Belgrade in Serbia. In order to get off his contract, Payne would need to execute a buyout. The Sixers could help—but they weren’t allowed to fork over money for the entire bill.

According to Marc Stein, the Sixers are able to contribute a max of $875K to help Payne work on a buyout. In total, Partizan Belgrade needed $1.75 million to complete the separation.

Payne is expected to sign a one-year deal with the Sixers. He becomes the second player the 76ers helped get out of an overseas contract in under two years. Last season, the Sixers worked with Real Madrid to get Guerschon Yabusele on the roster. He ended up playing himself into a two-year deal with the New York Knicks.

The veteran guard Payne is working on finding similar success as he returns to the league.

The 31-year-old veteran is a former 14th overall pick. He’s had playing stints with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, and the Sixers.

After getting traded to the Sixers in 2024, Payne appeared in 31 games. He posted averages of 9.3 points and 3.1 assists. He knocked down 38 percent of his threes.

Last season, Payne played for the Knicks. He was a part of 72 games, which marked a career-high. Payne averaged 6.9 points and 2.8 assists.

Although the Indiana Pacers brought Payne on for the preseason, he was cut before the regular season started. The Sixers are bringing Payne back for another run, hoping to take some minutes away from Tyrese Maxey, who has led the league in playing time before the All-Star break. It’s unclear how much Payne will make down the stretch, but the Sixers are contributing enough to get him out of his deal.
