Pat Riley explains what he meant by asking Pat Riley to step away
During the recent episode of ESPN’s First Take starring Stephen A. Smith and Shae Cornette, Smith broke his silence on a statement that he made in 2025. It was about the Miami Heat president, Pat Riley. Smith believed that Riley was no longer the guy who could attract players to the Heat. The NBA analyst, however, accepted the fact that Riley was well aware of what he was doing. Smith clarified this statement in the recent episode of ESPN’s First Take. He stated, “When I talked about him stepping away, I wasn’t talking about him stepping down as if he deserves to be fired. I was talking about him stepping upstairs and having a merit status and making a room for young protégé like Erik Spoelstra take over the helm and take some of that workload over him.” Smith further added, “He’s in his 80s now and going out and recruiting people to come to Miami isn’t as easy as it once was. It comes a point in time you have to step up, meaning step upstairs and pave the room for somebody, a young protege, that you know who can do the job because expose the future Hall of Famer and obviously the future coach of Team USA. I just wanted to say all that when talking about the great Pat Riley.” So, this is what Smith basically meant when he wanted Riley to step away and made the statement in 2025.
