Barnes played just under 32 minutes in the 116-107 loss to the defending-champion Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday, scoring 15 points with seven assists, three steals and four blocks.
Barnes’ elite defensive presence helped contribute to a team-high plus-18 rating for the game in a nine-point loss where no other player on the team had a positive plus-minus rating.
It was yet another dominant performance on the defensive end for the fifth-year player, who is a two-time All-Star and former Rookie of the Year winner.
After Barnes missed the Raptors’ first two games following the All-Star break earlier in February, Raptors guard Immanuel Quickley credited the team for stepping up with their leader out of the lineup.
“We had a lot of guys step up. Obviously, Scottie [Barnes] not playing, we miss him, probably Defensive Player of the Year, so we just had to all step up, and we did that.”
The calls for Barnes to be in the conversation for Defensive Player of the Year have been consistent from Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic, who has been preaching a defensive approach to the game since he was hired entering the 2023-24 campaign.
“Scottie is defensive player of the year,” Rajakovic said after a victory over the Indiana Pacers earlier in February. “He’s an all-star. He’s going to be a Finals MVP. He’s going to be an MVP one day. Write down the date I said that.”
On the season, Barnes has averaged 19.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game over 56 games. On the defensive end, he has averaged 1.3 steals and 1.6 blocks per game.
The Raptors dropped to 4-14 against top-10 opponents in the league with the loss to the Thunder, and get another test against an elite foe in the Spurs on Wednesday.
