LaVar Ball is back on the mic and back on his mission. On “The Big Baller Podcast,” the outspoken father made it clear he wants the Charlotte Hornets to sign free agent guard Lonzo Ball and reunite him with franchise cornerstone LaMelo Ball in the Queen City.
“It could happen! They need to make that move,” LaVar said when discussing the possibility of Charlotte bringing Lonzo in. And he didn’t stop there.
“Come on, man! You can ask anybody anywhere. They would become the most-watched NBA team ever. I say that on the fact of the mode that we’re in right now. Folks don’t need ESPN and all these shows now. There’s too much streaming and podcasts, and all this stuff going on. The media attention is there! That’s what I mean by the most watched and the biggest team ever, because of the timeframe we’re in right now. That allows us to be that.”

LaVar’s argument isn’t just about marketing. It’s about chemistry. He believes the Ball brothers were built to play together.
“I never taught them to play by themselves,” he said. “You’re not gonna ever see the best out of them until they’re all together. Until that happens, you’re only gonna get a little glimpse.”
The idea is intriguing. Lonzo, 28, is a former No. 2 overall pick who once looked like one of the league’s premier two-way guards before knee injuries derailed his trajectory. After returning in 2024-25, he struggled in limited action with the Cleveland Cavaliers, averaging 4.6 points, 4 rebounds and 3.9 assists while shooting just 30 percent from the field. He was later traded to the Utah Jazz and waived, making him a free agent.
Meanwhile, Charlotte has surged since Christmas. Behind LaMelo, Brandon Miller and rookie Kon Knueppel, the Hornets are hovering around playoff position and currently sit 28-31, just 4.5 games back of the sixth seed.

Still, the basketball fit remains complicated. The Hornets have a full 15-man roster and recently solidified their backup guard situation after acquiring Coby White from the Chicago Bulls at the trade deadline. Adding Lonzo would require a roster move, something Charlotte may not want to do given the current state of the team’s chemistry. Even with the uncanny connection between LaMelo and Lonzo, the Hornets are right in the thick of a push for better positioning in the Play-In tournament as they sit in the 10th spot.
LaVar sees hype and history, but Charlotte may look to prioritize current chemistry that is experiencing their most promising season in nearly a decade. As February closes, the dream of Ball brother basketball in teal remains just that: a dream.
