Memphis Grizzlies rookie Walter Clayton Jr. set a career high in assists and tied a franchise record on Sunday, helping the team to a win over the Indiana Pacers.
Clayton finished with seven points, 14 assists, four steals, three rebounds and one blocked shot in the 125-106 victory at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse. He shot 2-of-5 from the field and was a plus-17 in 34 minutes, 18 seconds of work.
The 18th overall pick tied teammate Ja Morant for the franchise single-game assist record by a rookie with the performance. His 14 assists are the most by a rookie in a game this season, topping Dallas Mavericks guard Ryan Nembhard (13).
The Grizzlies acquired Clayton, along with Taylor Hendricks, Kyle Anderson and Georges Niang, from the Utah Jazz on Feb. 3 in exchange for Jaren Jackson Jr., Jock Landale, John Konchar, Vince Williams Jr. and three first-round picks.
Since joining the team, Clayton is averaging 8.4 points, 6.4 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals while shooting 35% from the field in seven appearances, which includes two starts. He has led or tied the team high in assists four times since debuting on Feb. 6.
