CLEVELAND — “Irrational confidence” is a term Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson has used in the past to describe a trait he values in NBA players.

But there is a dangerously thin line between a healthy degree of confidence and cockiness.

Through a regular-season lens, the Cavs backed up their recent (anonymous) tough talk by defeating the Detroit Pistons 113-109 on March 3 at Rocket Arena.

The Cavs did it without All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell (right groin strain) and forward Dean Wade (right ankle sprain) in the lineup and after center Jarrett Allen (right knee) left the game with 7:32 remaining in the third quarter. They did it with Pistons big man Isaiah Stewart back from a seven-game suspension for fighting, and they held All-Star guard Cade Cunningham to 10 points as Cavs wing Jaylon Tyson led the defensive effort.

In the grand scheme of things, though, who really cares?

A win in March doesn’t erase these facts: The Cavs have gone 11-15 in the playoffs the past three years without advancing beyond the second round. They haven’t achieved anything truly significant when it matters most. Perhaps this is the year it will change, considering recent trade acquisitions James Harden, Keon Ellis and Dennis Schroder have altered the shape of the roster. But hubris is not advisable, especially not for a team yet to arrive in a meaningful way.

What spurred this rant anyway?

Cleveland.com quoted an unnamed Cavs player after a game last week in Detroit saying the following about the Pistons: “They aren’t in our class.”

The bulletin-board material came with obvious look-ahead-to-the-postseason context, and it surfaced after the Cavs fell 122-119 in overtime to the Pistons. It would seem like odd timing, but the Cavs were apparently emboldened because they lost a nail-biter on Feb. 27 in Little Caesars Arena while starting guards Mitchell and Harden sat out with injuries.

When Detroit visited Cleveland four days later, Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff, formerly of the Cavs, said during pregame media availability, “I have no response. If you mean it, you don’t say it anonymously.”

Bickerstaff is right. Talk is cheap, and it’s even cheaper when someone doesn’t put a name to it.

Here are a couple of on-the-record quotes from the Cavs (39-24) after they beat the Eastern Conference-leading Pistons (45-15) and thereby evened the series between the teams 2-2 in their final 2025-26 regular-season meeting:

Forward Evan Mobley, whose 18 points matched Harden’s scoring output and trailed only Tyson’s 22 for the team high: “I think we had a slow start this year, and that happens sometimes. We’re trying to find a way to work our way back up to the top. … We definitely feel like we’re a top team and a contender this year.”

Point guard Dennis Schroder, who had 15 points, five rebounds and five assists off the bench: “I think we did our job tonight. We let one slip on Friday in Detroit. We could have won that one as well. But we showed that we can play with them. Obviously, they’re a great group and talented group, but we’re not bad, either.”

Not as spicy as “they aren’t in our class,” right?

One school of thought about this topic is the Cavs are appropriately bold about their collective abilities. They need to believe in themselves to reach their potential in this NBA Finals-or-bust situation, so the anonymous quote is a good sign.

Instead of running with those talking points, let’s allow sanity to prevail.

Did Jarrett Allen get hurt tonight?: Cavs starting center leaves Cavaliers vs. Pistons with knee injury

The Cavs are talented, and the East is wide open. Still, Atkinson and undisputed team leader Mitchell should remind everyone in the locker room a lack of maturity has cost more talented teams than this one.

Until the Cavs can get healthy, maintain a clean injury report and consistently demonstrate adequate mental and physical toughness in the playoffs, the anonymous quote should be considered as unserious as Bickerstaff portrayed it to be.

Confidence is necessary, but don’t go overboard and claim to be on a different level than the Pistons when you haven’t earned the label. Prove it with your actions — in the playoffs.

And, hey, Cleveland versus Detroit could be somewhere on the bracket. Right now, the Cavs are fourth in the East, and the Pistons are first. If the teams with those seeds were to advance, they would encounter each other in Round 2.

“You start thinking … if we play these guys, not jumping ahead of ourselves, but you’re in that mindset now,” Atkinson said. “I think there’s a little more detail [during film study]. There’s a little more rewinding and pausing.”

It could be a trap, though. Last month, Atkinson conceded the Cavs were fixated on what appeared to be a postseason collision course with the Boston Celtics a year ago, only to face the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers in the playoffs.

Circling back to the anonymous quote, the Cavs ought to remind themselves about the bitter taste of the humble pie the Pacers served Cleveland during its 4-1 series loss in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals.

As for a potential Cavs-Pistons playoff clash this spring, what’s not to like?

Dan Gilbert’s team versus his hometown team. Atkinson versus his predecessor, Bickerstaff. A franchise trying to shake its soft-as-Charmin playoff reputation versus one willing to rumble.

Man, it would be a fascinating series. You can quote me.
