Illinois guard Keaton Wagler didn’t come into college with the highest regard. In fact, he didn’t have very many high offers, and the Illini ended up being his only major one. The 6-foot-6 freshman has quickly become one of the best players in the Big Ten. The buzz about his potential as a high first-round selection in the NBA is legit.

College Career

Wagler had quite a debut in his first game. He had 18 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. From there, Wagler continued to just get better and better throughout the 2025-26 season. That debut was impressive, but for much of the first month or so, Wagler was overshadowed by fellow freshman David Mirkovic, who earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week Honors the first two weeks of the season. By December, Keaton was taking all of the headlines for Illinois.

His scoring only continued to get more and more impressive as the season went on. By far his biggest breakout moment was when the Illini rolled into Purdue on January 24th. Wagler was ready to set a number of records in Illinois history. It was during that game that Wagler more than cemented his place as a potential lottery pick. He finished with 46 points, which set an Illinois freshman record, while also tying for the second-most points in a single game in Illinois history.

He’s scored double figures in 27 of his 30 games played this season, with a current streak of 23-straight games in double-digit scoring. Wagler has proven to be the go-to scorer for Illinois this season.

Strengths

Wagler has shown throughout most of the season that he’s a bucket getter. Whether it’s driving and getting to the free-throw line. Or making three-point shots. Wagler has the tools to score at all three levels. He’s shooting 81 percent from the free-throw line, along with 42 percent from deep.

For an Illinois team that shoots a lot of threes’s Wagler’s consistency from deep is a massive part of his game. His IQ on the floor is impressive, and his ability to distribute the ball while also getting his own baskets makes for something special. He also has the durability to play deep minutes.

Weaknesses

Despite his shooting ability, he doesn’t quite have the upper-body strength to finish through contact at a consistent rate. That lack of strength also makes it hard for Wagler when defending stronger guards. He needs separation when trying to make a play to the basket. He had his worst game by far at Michigan State when tightly guarded; that night, it took him until the second half to make a field goal.

Wagler has a high volume of shots, but sometimes he can shoot the ball too much. In that game against the Spartans, Wagler was 2-of-16 from the field.

NBA Comparison

Illinois has had some great players of similar capability in recent memory to what Wagler brings to the table. Ayo Dosunmu and Kasparas Jakucionis come to mind. However, Wagler is in the same mold as Brandon Roy and Tyrese Haliburton.

Both were combo guards, who didn’t really start as primary ball-handlers, but quickly developed into the go-to player bringing the ball down the floor. Being 6-foot-6, Wagler has a real chance to be a high selection and carve out an All-Star-type career, much like Roy did, before injuries caught up to him, or how Haliburton has risen to the level of a franchise player.

NBA Draft Projection

Top-10 Pick.
