Phoenix Suns big Mark Williams will be re-evaluated in two-to-three weeks after being diagnosed with a stress reaction in the third metatarsal of his left foot, the team announced March 5.

Suns coach Jordan Ott said this wasn’t something Williams had been dealing with as of late. He was initially ruled out of Thursday’s game with left foot soreness.

“No. It just popped up,” Ott said. “(Wednesday) when he came in, day in between games, just had a little soreness. Went to have an image and you saw the news.”

Williams posted 10 points and nine rebounds in Tuesday’s 114-103 road win against the Sacramento Kings. He finished Tuesday’s game with a lob dunk with 30.8 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

“I think that’s why it was surprising for all of us,” Ott said. “There wasn’t a moment where you can see visibly that this is the result of.”

The 7-footer is averaging 11.6 points and 8.1 rebounds in a career-high 56 games.

Williams has remained relatively healthy this season, missing just five games after having three injury-prone seasons with the Charlotte Hornets. He played a total of 106 games in three seasons with Charlotte.

“Since Day 1, we talked about him strengthening, him being in the weight room, him sacrificing court time,” Ott said. “Sacrificing a lot of things this summer to be stronger and play throughout the season and he’s had great health throughout the year.

“He’s dealing with it like any professional athlete would when something you love is taken away,” Ott added. “It’s tough. It’s tough for our group. You absolutely feel for him because of all the work that he’s done to get to this point. All the things that he did to contribute to where we’re at today.”
