Coach Hoiberg is prepared to lead Huskers at his former home in Big Ten Tournament
EMPLOYEE’S NAME, BUT DID TELL US THEY’RE ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE. THE HUSKERS ARE GETTING READY FOR AN HISTORIC GAME IN CHICAGO TOMORROW. IT’S A PLACE FULL OF HISTORY FOR SOME OF THE TEAM’S LEADERS. LAUREN MICHELSON JOINS US LIVE FROM THE UNITED CENTER TO EXPLAIN. HEY, LAUREN. HEY, BILL. QUANECIA. THAT’S RIGHT. NEBRASKA TAKES THE FLOOR TOMORROW IN THE QUARTERFINAL ROUND OF THE BIG TEN TOURNAMENT HERE AT THE UNITED CENTER, HOME TO THE CHICAGO BULLS, WHICH MEANS IT WILL BE A HOMECOMING FOR NEBRASKA HEAD COACH FRED HOIBERG. HOIBERG PLAYED FOR THE BULLS FROM 2000. FROM 1993 TO 2003, THEN CAME BACK TO CHICAGO TO COACH THE BULLS IN 2015 TO 2018, BEFORE COMING TO NEBRASKA. NOW HE’S LEADING THE HUSKERS AS A TWO SEED IN THIS TOURNAMENT, THE HIGHEST MARK IN PROGRAM HISTORY. A BIG PART OF THAT SUCCESS COMES DOWN TO HIS SON, SENIOR GUARD SAM HOIBERG, WHO ANCHORS ONE OF THE BEST DEFENSES IN THE COUNTRY. NEBRASKA LED THE CONFERENCE IN SCORING DEFENSE, STEALS AND THREE POINT PERCENTAGE, WHILE SAM MALONE LEADS THE BIG TEN, AVERAGING TWO STEALS A GAME. AND HE SAYS PLAYING IN THIS BUILDING, OF COURSE, IS SPECIAL. BUT FOR THIS TEAM, THE FOCUS ISN’T JUST THE MOMENT, IT’S WHAT THEY CAN DO WITH IT. REALLY COOL. YOU KNOW, I NEVER REALLY DREAMED OF PLAYING IN THE UNITED CENTER SPOKE ABOUT IT AT LENGTH THAT, YOU KNOW, I HAD DREAMS OF PLAYING HERE, BUT NBA WAS NEVER REALLY A THOUGHT, SO I NEVER THOUGHT I’D PLAY IN THE UNITED CENTER SO THAT WAS COOL. BEING ABLE TO PLAY THERE A FEW YEARS AGO AND IT DIDN’T GO WELL. AND I’M JUST SO FOCUSED ON TRYING TO WIN THESE GAMES THAT I’M NOT THINKING TOO MUCH ABOUT, YOU KNOW, GOING BACK TO CHICAGO, WHERE I’M FROM, AND I JUST WANT TO WIN THESE GAMES. NEBRASKA ARRIVED IN CHICAGO ON WEDNESDAY. THEY ACTUALLY SPENT TIME PRACTICING AT DEPAUL THIS MORNING. THEY’RE WAITING TO SEE WHO THEY WILL PLAY IN THE QUARTERFINALS ON FRIDAY AT 530. EITHER PURDUE OR NORTHWESTERN. BUT PURDUE IS LEADING NORTHWESTERN, 3918 IN THE FIRST HALF RIG
