With just one month left in the 2025-2026 NBA regular season, the race for the playoffs is on, and every contending team is trying to put as many impactful wins on the board as possible. That means every game is exciting, but it’s especially exciting when two likely playoff-bound teams face off, and it’s even better when one of them is working hard to stay in the fight.

This week on Sunday Night Basketball on NBC and Peacock, we get to see a matchup just like that as the battered but battling Golden State Warriors head across the country to New York City, where they’ll face a Knicks squad positioned as one of the best in the East. Let’s take a closer look at the matchup.

After fighting all season to stay above .500, the Warriors finally seemed to be gaining significant ground in January, only to slip again when injuries started to kick in. Leading scorer Steph Curry already missed several games, and we got the news earlier this week that he’ll be missing more, including this Sunday Night Basketball matchup. Curry’s absence, along with other injures (Jimmy Butler’s not back until next season), means that the rest of the Warriors will have to really bring it on Sunday, and they certainly should, what with a spot in the Play-In Tournament on the line.

Standing in their way, though, are the Knicks, one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference and a squad determined to build on last season’s playoff run and take things all the way to the Finals this time out. They’ve only lost nine games at home so far this season, preserving the power of Madison Square Garden, and they’re heavy favorites against the Warriors thanks to solid work from All-Stars Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns.

The Warriors are out to prove they can still stand as one of the league’s most winning teams, while the Knicks are out to show they can become one. It’s a big game no matter who you root for.
