Birmingham selected as host site for 2026 American Athletic Conference men’s, women’s basketball championships

  • May 31, 2025

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The American Athletic Conference (AAC) is bringing their 2026 men’s and women’s basketball conference tournaments to Birmingham!

The 2026 championships will be held inside Legacy Arena inside the BJCC.

Executive director and CEO of the BJCC Tad Snider says that the city of Birmingham has established itself as a premier destination for basketball, especially after hosting multiple rounds of the NCAA tournament.

“We’re incredibly excited to welcome the American Athletic Conference to Legacy Arena. With the recent NCAA Women’s Regionals, the 2023 Men’s First and Second Rounds, and another set of Men’s Rounds scheduled for 2028, Birmingham has firmly established itself as a premier destination for championship basketball. We’re proud to showcase our vibrant city and world-class venue, and we look forward to delivering an unforgettable experience for student-athletes, fans, and the entire American Athletic Conference community.”

AAC directors of athletics approved Birmingham for the 2026 championship before the tournament will move to Tampa, Florida in 2027 and 2028.

AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti says the conference is thrilled to be coming to the Magic City and knows that the city will support the event.

“We are thrilled to bring our basketball championships to Birmingham and Tampa. Our top priority when we began this bid process was to deliver the best possible experience for our student-athletes. The ability of Birmingham and Tampa to accommodate both championships and the year-round support that we will receive from their respective local committees will help to make these events an unforgettable experience for our players and fans.”
