Boston College announced Thursday that it hired UConn assistant Luke Murray to be the program’s next men’s basketball head coach.

Murray spent the last five seasons on Dan Hurley’s staff at UConn, a successful run that has included two national championships in 2023 and 2024 along with five straight trips to the NCAA Tournament.

Murray, who is the son of famed actor Bill Murray, has extensive coaching experience, having also previously been an assistant coach at Louisville, Xavier, Rhode Island, Towson and Wagner. Murray is known for being a strong offensive-minded coach.

“I am deeply honored and incredibly grateful to lead the Boston College men’s basketball program,” Murray said in a statement. “BC is a university with a prestigious academic reputation and a storied basketball tradition. Boston College alumni and fans will find our program defined by a standard of excellence, and our team will play an unselfish, tough, and highly competitive brand of basketball. I am excited to get to work to build this proud program. Go Eagles.”

Murray has his work cut out for him as he takes over the Eagles. The program nose-dived following the firing of Al Skinner after the 2009-10 season with BC going 184-290, including a 73-200 mark in the ACC, over the past 15 seasons. The Eagles haven’t made an NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009.

BC fired Earl Grant earlier this month, ending a five-year run for Grant in which he went 72-92 with an 11-20 record this season.

“Today marks a turning point in Boston College Men’s Basketball,” BC athletic director Blake James said in a statement. “In Luke Murray, we have found a leader who does not just understand the modern landscape of college basketball — he has helped define it. His role in building a national championship caliber program, his sophisticated offensive vision, and his relentless pursuit of excellence make him the perfect fit to lead our student-athletes.”
