CLEVELAND — Max Strus‘ motor is always running. He’s always moving. He’s always going at full speed.
It’s an element of movement and grit the Cavaliers knew they were missing through the first several months of this season while he rehabbed from offseason foot surgery.

Strus checked into his first game of the season March 15 and instantly took over, and he’s been assimilating ever sense as the Cavs try to prepare for the playoffs. He then tormented his former team, the Miami Heat, in a Cavs win in which he poured in eight 3s and finished with 29 points.
He never seems to stop, or let up, or take a break unless it’s an injury that leaves him with no other choice. It’s what the Cavs appreciate the most about him, and it’s why they viewed him as such an important missing element for most of the season.
“Everything game speed. Everything full out,” said Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson when asked what it’s like to watch Strus work. “He’s first in the gym, in the performance room, lifting, rehab, recovery.
“He’s got this practice motor. Most guys go at kind of this halfway speed. He’s all out.”

Perhaps more importantly, Strus isn’t blindly sprinting around the court full-go without a plan. All-out effort isn’t helpful without a compass.

Max Strus returns from injury as Cavs mesh with James Harden, others
James Harden has played with more than 150 different teammates across a (future Hall of Fame) career that has spanned 17 seasons and six different teams. He’s not sure he’s had teammates with higher basketball IQs than Strus and Sam Merrill, the Cavs’ duo of sharp shooters who in turn help with spacing for Harden, Donovan Mitchell and others.
“Two of the smartest basketball players that I’ve played with,” Harden said. “Obviously they can shoot the crap out of the ball, but their body movement, knowing when to screen, when not to screen, how to screen, is very, very important for somebody that can actually shoot the ball like them.

“It’s rare that you can have that. When you find that, it means you got something special.”
Since the trade deadline, the Cavs have been in a constant state of learning as they try to cram several years of chemistry into several weeks. Strus and Merrill both being available for the first time, and now able to be deployed next to Harden or Mitchell, has given the Cavs the feeling of a team able to send a constant barrage of 3s that never relents. When they’ve missed time, the offensive firepower has been noticeably lessened.
And when Strus was told later that Harden had delivered such a compliment, he stopped for a second to make sure he heard it correctly.
“In his career? He said that? Wow,” Strus said with a shrug. “That’s a pretty big compliment. I think me and Sam strive to make the game easy for those guys, and we study and learn to keep the floor spaced and get them to their strong suits.”

Strus has had a few moments like he had against the Heat, along with a few quieter games. He says he knows he’s role, and he’s happy with it. Some nights, he might hit eight 3s. Other nights, he might barely get a shot off. It’s why the Cavs value more than just his shooting ability, though they certainly don’t mind when he can explode for 29 points on a given night.
It’s another element the Cavs are trying to add to the mix as quickly as possible before the playoffs arrive. For now, they’re just happy to have their non-stop motor back on the floor.
