New Orleans Pelicans moving G League affiliate from Birmingham to Kenner

A COMMUNITY. I LOVE IT. WATCHING ALL THOSE KIDS, IT’S SUCH CHAOS. SOME OF THEM GET ROUGH. I MEAN, IT’S GREAT. IT’S A IT’S A LOT OF FUN. ALL RIGHT. WARMER AND MORE HUMID FOR THE WEEK AHEAD. THAT MEANS MORE CLOUD COVER AROUND AND EVEN THE CHANCE FOR SOME SHOWERS AND PERHAPS EVEN A FEW THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH THE WEEK. COVERAGE DOESN’T LOOK TO BE TERRIBLY HIGH UNTIL WE GET INTO THE END OF THE WEEK, AND MORE SO OVER THE WEEKEND WHEN A COLD FRONT WILL BE BRINGING THE BEST CHANCE FOR SOME MORE WIDESPREAD RAIN AND EVEN A FEW THUNDERSTORMS TOO. IN THE MEANTIME, THIS MORNING AS WE CHECK OUT FIRST WARNING LIVE RADAR, WE DO HAVE JUST A FEW RADAR ECHOES SHOWING UP HERE IN PARTS OF WALKER AND NORTHERN JEFFERSON COUNTIES. VERY, VERY SPOTTY. SO MAYBE A FEW SPRINKLES HERE, KIND OF HEADING UP INTO BLOUNT COUNTY, JUST TO THE WEST OF SPRINGVILLE AND THEN CLOSE TO DORA TOO, KIND OF HEADING IN THE GENERAL DIRECTION OF SOMERTON. YOU MAY GET A LITTLE BIT OF RAIN BRIEF, THOUGH, AND FAIRLY LIGHT IF YOU DO CATCH A SHOWER, NOT ONLY THIS MORNING, BUT THROUGH THE DAY TODAY. AND SO WE’VE GOT LIMITED CHANCE FOR A COUPLE OF SPOTTY SHOWERS. SOME CLOUDS THIS MORNING WILL BE PRETTY MILD. SOME 60 AT NINE, LOW 70S BY NOON, AND THEN SOME UPPER 70S AS WE GET INTO THE AFTERNOON HOURS, WE’RE GOING TO JUMP AHEAD A FEW DAYS. SO THIS IS HEADING INTO THURSDAY, FRIDAY AND OVER THE WEEKEND. AND YOU’LL NOTICE DURING THE DAY ON THURSDAY, YOU CAN SEE A FEW WIDELY SCATTERED SHOWERS, COUPLE OF STORMS. AND I REALLY THINK THE BEST CHANCE COME THURSDAY AND EVEN INTO FRIDAY FOR A FEW STORMS, MAY ACTUALLY BE ACROSS THE WESTERN PART OF THE STATE. THOSE AREAS THAT ARE MAYBE A LITTLE MORE INFLUENCED BY THE THE TROUGH OR THE FRONT, AND THEN HEADING INTO FRIDAY, YOU’LL NOTICE THIS REALLY DOESN’T SHOW MUCH COVERAGE FOR US HERE LOCALLY. A LOT OF IT STAYS WEST OF US. AND THEN EVENTUALLY THAT FRONT WILL GET A PUSH THAT IT NEEDS OUR DIRECTION HEADING INTO SATURDAY, BUT IT MAY VERY WELL HOLD OFF UNTIL LATE IN THE DAY. SATURDAY, SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY, WHEN WE EXPECT THAT FRONT TO FINALLY MOVE IN AND A BETTER CHANCE FOR SOME SHOWERS AND STORMS BY THEN. SO WE’LL GO WITH ABOUT A 40% CHANCE ON FRIDAY, UP TO ABOUT A 60% CHANCE SATURDAY. BUT IT MAY VERY WELL BE THAT A LOT OF THAT HOLDS OFF UNTIL SATURDAY NIGHT AND THEN INTO EASTER SUNDAY, WHEN THE ACTUAL FRONT COMES IN. UPPER 70S TODAY. AND THEN WE WILL START TO SEE THOSE TEMPERATURES GET A LITTLE BIT WARMER FOR THE MIDDLE AND END OF THE WEEK. AND WE ARE GOING TO INCLUDE AT LEAST THE CHANCE FOR A FEW SHOWERS AND STORMS EACH AND EVERY DAY THIS WEEK. ALTHOUGH COVERAGE LOOKS LIMITED, THE BETTER CHANCE COMES IN OVER THE WEEKEND WITH THE ACTUAL FRONT COME SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. IT’S GOING TO BE PRETTY WARM AND HUMID. THE FRO

The New Orleans Pelicans announced Monday that their NBA G League team is leaving Birmingham.

The Pelicans said the Birmingham Squadron will move to Kenner, Louisiana, and rebrand as the Laketown Squadron.

Kenner is just 13 miles from the New Orleans metro area, which is where the Pelicans are based and play. The city of Kenner voted in early February to support the relocation, as Pelicans management looked to move its G League affiliate closer to home.

“The close proximity to Kenner gives us the ability to better align our basketball operations and coaching strategies, integrate player development, and enhance roster flexibility throughout the season,” said Joe Dumars, Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations. “We are excited to announce this move and look forward to deepening our connection with the local community.”

As part of the relocation, the Squadron and the city of Kenner plan to renovate the Pontchartrain Center ahead of the 2026-27 season. Upgrades to the facility will include new locker rooms, improved audio and lighting systems and enhanced video boards.

The Squadron finished its final season in Birmingham on March 27.

Pelicans governor Gayle Benson thanked the city of Birmingham for its support over the years.

“We are extremely grateful for the partnership we have built with the city of Birmingham, including the fans, community partners and civic leaders who supported the Squadron on and off the court,” Benson said. “Birmingham remains an important part of our region, and we thank Mayor Randall Woodfin and BJCC CEO Tad Snider for their leadership and support through this transition.”
