Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. has not seen the floor for the Nets since Mar. 10 when he put up 19 points and two rebounds in a 138-100 loss to the Detroit Pistons. Since then, Brooklyn has ruled Porter out of the lineup due to ankle and hamstring injuries. While Porter may not see the court again this season, the Nets still have to think about his future contract.
“His impact on the court, durability and age — Porter will turn 28 in June — should warrant discussions on a new contract,” Bobby Marks wrote for ESPN when discussing what Porter’s next contract could look like. Porter has one year left on the five-year, $179.3 million rookie-scale extension he signed with the Denver Nuggets in September of 2021, meaning that he is due $40.8 million next season before he becomes an unrestricted free-agent.

“He will be eligible to sign a four-year, $234 million deal,” Marks continued. “It’s important to note that Brooklyn has no incentive to tank next season, as Houston has the right to swap first-round picks in 2027. Brooklyn will enter free agency with a high lottery pick and could have between $45 million and $55 million in cap room heading into free agency.”
As it pertains to whether the Nets will sign Porter to an extension, general manager Sean Marks has not indicated whether that is the intention, but it’s safe to assume that’s where Brooklyn would head given Porter’s resume. Porter is coming off the best season of his career as he’s averaging 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from behind the three-point line.
As Marks alluded to, Porter is eligible to sign an extension worth $234 million over four years, meaning that he would earn $58.5 million per season once the extension kicks in. Granted, that doesn’t that the Nets have to sign him to that exact contract structure, but it’s the maximum amount of years and money that he could get on the extension. Here is how some members of the Nets community reacted to what Brooklyn could offer to Porter in an extension:
