San Antonio Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama expressed delight toward PSG amid the French club’s UEFA Champions League triumph.

On Saturday at the Allianz Arena in Munich, PSG – who have ties to Michael Jordan thanks to their kit branding – ripped Inter Milan apart. PSG won 5-0, with goals from Achraf Hakimi, Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, Senny Mayulu, and two from Desire Doue to clinch a landmark win.

Watching on, Wembanyama – whose sophomore NBA season was prematurely ended by blood clots – was delighted with the result as his hometown team finally captured the European Cup it so desperately craved. He took to social media to write: “Merciii Paris.”

Wembanyama is happy to see PSG win. He was born in Le Chesnay, in the Paris region, and played for Metropolitans 92 before becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

Entering his second season surrounded by remarkable hype, the Frenchman has averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and a league-leading 3.8 blocks in 46 games for the Spurs, who boast a 23-29 record. His combination with Chris Paul and the rest of the young Spurs team was helping the franchise develop an exciting future. The Spurs also made a blockbuster trade for De’Aaron Fox to combine him with Wembanyama going forward.

Wembanyama was a frontrunner to win Defensive Player of the Year before seeing his season end early. The 21-year-old had to step away from the game in February after a blood clot, identified as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), was discovered in his shoulder.

The towering center expressed relief at how the DVT didn’t threaten his life, but acknowledged the potential alarming consequences the condition can cause. He also detailed his cautious approach to getting back on the hardwood.

“I’ve already overcome this issue,” Wembanyama told the media. “There are many more things involved when you go to hospital for a blood clot.

“We’re taking our time and are neither ahead nor behind in recovery, but it’s a process and there are definitely some steps to reach. I wasn’t at my best during the All-Star [game], it was by no means easy to learn and process it.

“Looking back, I’m really fortunate. This happened, but we all deal with what we have.

“I’m still in the top 1 percent of the luckiest people, I have nothing to complain about.”

DVT is a condition where a clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the lower extremities or arm. While DVT can lead to symptoms like swelling and pain, sometimes it presents no signs whatsoever.

While Wembanyama prepares for his third season in the NBA with the Spurs, PSG will celebrate a historic campaign. PSG won Ligue 1 and added the Champions League title to cap off a memorable season, becoming European champions for the first time.
