HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – Gov. Ned Lamont proclaimed the weekend of Friday, April 3, through Monday, April 6, in honor of the UConn Huskies women’s and men’s basketball teams for each advancing to the Final Four of the 2026 NCAA Division I Basketball Tournaments.
The weekend will officially be known as “Connecticut Is the Basketball Capital of the World and the UConn Basketball Student-Athletes Are the Best and Most Talented in the Nation, So Let’s Support Our Huskies in Bringing the NCAA Championship Trophies Back Home Where They Belong Weekend” in the State of Connecticut.
The governor encouraged all Connecticut residents to show their Huskies pride by wearing UConn Huskies gear, blue and white, and displaying team signs and flags.
“I am so awestruck by the UConn basketball student-athletes for their elite-level performances that are setting a new standard in college sports and bringing an enormous amount of pride to Connecticut,” Lamont said. “It is beyond impressive to have one university deliver so many talented athletes and be so dominant at basketball like UConn. I urge everyone in Connecticut this weekend to support these teams, wear white and blue, and remind the nation that this is the state where champions are made.”
Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz praised the teams and their coaches.
“I could not be prouder of the UConn women’s and men’s basketball teams for their outstanding performances throughout this tournament,” Bysiewicz said. “Under the leadership of Geno Auriemma and Dan Hurley, and with exceptional efforts from players like Tarris Reed, Jr., and Azzi Fudd, these student-athletes continue to show why UConn is a powerhouse in basketball. We are all rooting for them as they head into the Final Four and push toward bringing those championship trophies home to Connecticut.”
The UConn women are scheduled to play the South Carolina Gamecocks in the Final Four on Friday, April 3. The UConn men are scheduled to play the Illinois Fighting Illini in the Final Four on Saturday, April 4.
