Collin Gillespie passed Quentin Richardson to set the Phoenix Suns’ single-season 3-point record in Thursday’s game at the Charlotte Hornets.
Gillespie made his 227th 3 of the season with 9:19 left in the second quarter, and it was his second 3 of the game. The guard is shooting 40.9% from deep this season, making a career-high three of his attempts per game.

Richardson set the Suns’ franchise record during the 2004-05 season, shooting 35.8% from 3.
Gillespie broke the 21-year-old record on 77 fewer 3-point attempts.
After playing in 57 games across his first two years in the NBA, Gillespie has played in 76 games this season.
The 26-year-old guard shot 39.5% from beyond the arc in his rookie season with the Denver Nuggets (24 games), and shot a career-high 43.3% from deep last year in his first season in Phoenix (33 games).
Gillespie has taken off in his third year in the league, with career highs in minutes (28.9), points (13.1), assists (4.8), rebounds (4.1) and steals (1.3) per game. He’s started 57 games for the Suns and missed just one game this season.
More about the Suns’ 3-point record Collin Gillespie broke
Gillespie is the fifth Suns player to make at least 200 3s in a season, and all have come in this century.
Richardson set the previous Suns franchise record (226) by passing Dan Majerle’s 199 made 3s in the 1994-95 season.
Since Richardson’s historic 2004-05 season, three other Suns have eclipsed 200 3s in a single season.
Raja Bell did so in 2006-07 (205), Gerald Green did seven years later in 2013-14 (204). Grayson Allen, who’s the lone current player, reached the mark in 2023-24 by matching Bell’s total.
Richardson played 13 years in the NBA, and his record-breaking season came in his one year with the Suns — it was also the year Steve Nash collected one of his two NBA MVP awards.
